Your agreement

These Terms form a legally binding agreement between you and Lumen. They include by reference:

  • the Lumen Privacy Policy;
  • any feature-specific notice shown in the product;
  • any rules, limits, or safety notices shown in the app or console; and
  • app store, operating-system, or platform terms that apply to the app distribution channel or integration you use.

If a feature-specific notice conflicts with these Terms, the feature-specific notice controls for that feature, unless mandatory law requires a different result.

Your agreement may be formed electronically. Actions such as tapping accept, creating an account, signing in, continuing to use Lumen after notice of changes, or using a specific feature may constitute electronic acceptance where permitted by law.

Eligibility

You may use Lumen only if:

  • you can legally enter into these Terms;
  • you are not prohibited from using Lumen under applicable law;
  • you meet the age requirement that applies in your jurisdiction;
  • you have valid parent or guardian consent if law requires it; and
  • you use Lumen in compliance with these Terms and applicable law.

You may not use Lumen on behalf of an organization unless you are authorized to bind that organization. If you use Lumen for an organization, you includes both you and that organization.

2. Accounts, sign-in, and security

You are responsible for your account and for activity through your account.

You agree to:

  • provide accurate and current information;
  • keep your device, account, sign-in provider, Lumen PIN, Recovery Key, and credentials secure;
  • avoid sharing your account or transferring account access;
  • notify us promptly if you suspect unauthorized access;
  • follow re-authentication, device-trust, and recovery steps required for sensitive actions; and
  • comply with any feature, quota, security, or abuse-prevention limits.

Lumen may support sign-in through Google, Apple, phone verification, or other methods that we make available. These third-party providers may have their own terms, privacy notices, and technical requirements.

We may refresh, rotate, revoke, or expire sessions and trusted-device state for security, operational, legal, or abuse-prevention reasons.

3. Lumen feature group

The following feature group is part of these Terms. Each item explains the main rules that apply when you use that feature.

  • Identity, sign-in, and onboarding
    Main rules
    You must provide accurate account information and use only sign-in methods you are authorized to use. Provider sign-in verifies identity but does not by itself make a device trusted for encrypted data.
  • Sessions and device trust
    Main rules
    You must keep your trusted devices secure. Lumen may refresh, rotate, revoke, or expire sessions for security, operational, or legal reasons. Certain features may be blocked until the device is trusted.
  • Contacts and discovery
    Main rules
    You may add, search, or share contacts only where you have the right to do so. Do not upload or share another person's data unlawfully or deceptively.
  • Chat and messaging
    Main rules
    You are responsible for messages, files, locations, contact cards, and other content you send. Group membership and message actions must comply with permissions and product rules. Recipients may save, copy, forward, screenshot, or report content they receive.
  • Chat privacy preview controls
    Main rules
    Preview hiding is a local display control. It does not delete messages, stop recipients from seeing content, or guarantee that content cannot be captured.
  • Native share extension
    Main rules
    You may share only content you have the right to share. You are responsible for choosing the correct destination, such as a chat or My Space. If a share action fails, you may need to retry from the host app or operating-system share sheet.
  • My Space
    Main rules
    My Space is designed for private encrypted storage. You are responsible for keeping recovery paths available. If you lose required keys or recovery methods, encrypted content may be unrecoverable.
  • Calls
    Main rules
    Lumen calls depend on network, device, permission, and third-party infrastructure conditions. Calls are not emergency services and must not be used as a replacement for emergency communications.
  • Split Bill
    Main rules
    Split Bill records shared expenses, receipt data, participants, calculations, and paid or unpaid status. You must review OCR output, totals, participants, and split rules before relying on or sharing them. Lumen does not move money or guarantee settlement.
  • Ask Help
    Main rules
    Ask Help records store request details, amounts, comments, proof descriptions, and proof files as client-encrypted content. Lumen can read limited participant, routing, storage, open/paid, deletion and timestamp metadata needed to operate the workflow, but cannot decrypt that protected content. You must submit accurate and lawful information. Lumen does not guarantee that help will be provided, repaid, accepted, or resolved.
  • Account, profile, and settings
    Main rules
    You are responsible for your profile information, avatar, preferences, sessions, push-token settings, read-receipt choices, profile sharing, and account deletion decisions.
  • Security, recovery, and E2EE key management
    Main rules
    You must safeguard your Lumen PIN, Recovery Key, devices, and sign-in methods. Lumen may be unable to restore encrypted data if required recovery paths are unavailable.
  • Sync, app config, feature flags, files, and storage
    Main rules
    Lumen may apply feature flags, app config, storage limits, quotas, file restrictions, and sync rules. Some features may vary by device, account state, region, rollout, quota, or experiment.
  • Console, support, and admin operations
    Main rules
    Console access is limited to authorized users. Console users must use admin tools only for legitimate operational, support, security, audit, configuration, or compliance purposes. Console actions may be logged and reviewed.
  • Websites, support, feedback, and diagnostics
    Main rules
    You must provide accurate information when contacting support or submitting reports. We may use diagnostics and support information to investigate issues, secure the Service, and improve reliability.

4. Private communication, structured workflows, and encryption

Product boundary

Lumen is not a single undifferentiated data path.

Normal chats, ordinary attachments, encrypted My Space items, and supported encrypted communication flows are treated as private communication or encrypted storage features. Split Bill, Ask Help, receipt OCR, proof handling, paid/unpaid status, quota controls, and console workflows are structured workflows that require state, calculations, or operational controls. For records created through the current encrypted Ask Help API, request details, comments, proof descriptions, and proof files are client-encrypted; Lumen can process only their ciphertext and limited readable participant, routing, storage, open/paid and deletion metadata.

Encrypted Ask Help records. Ask Help launches with one client-encrypted /api/v1 contract. Request details, amounts, comments, proof descriptions, and proof files are encrypted on the client before upload; no plaintext Ask Help endpoint or version-transition alias exists. The pre-launch database is created directly from the encrypted schema, so the launched service does not retain a legacy server-readable Ask Help dataset or recovery quarantine. References in these Terms to content that Lumen cannot decrypt apply to every Ask Help record created by the launched service.

By using a structured workflow, you instruct Lumen to process the data required to operate that workflow. Do not submit sensitive, unrelated, unlawful, or excessive information into Split Bill, Ask Help, support, or console workflows.

Device trust, encryption, and recovery

Some Lumen features depend on encrypted local key material, device trust, Lumen PIN, Recovery Key, old-device approval, or device-to-device transfer.

You understand and agree that:

  • Lumen may block encrypted chat or related features until device trust and local key checks are complete;
  • sign-in alone may not restore encrypted data;
  • Lumen does not need your plaintext private keys, Lumen PIN, or Recovery Key to operate server-side trust checks;
  • if all trusted devices and recovery methods are unavailable, encrypted data may be unrecoverable;
  • you are responsible for safely storing Recovery Keys and maintaining access to trusted devices; and
  • security restrictions are part of the Service, not a defect.

5. Your content, visibility, and moderation

Your content and permissions

You retain ownership of content you submit to Lumen, subject to the rights you grant us under these Terms.

You grant Lumen a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, transmit, process, display, sync, copy, format, secure, troubleshoot, and otherwise use your content only as needed to provide, maintain, protect, support, and improve the Service, comply with law, and enforce these Terms.

This license includes the right to work with service providers and processors where needed for the Service. For encrypted features, our practical ability to use plaintext content may be technically limited by the encryption design.

You represent that you have all rights, permissions, and lawful bases needed to upload, send, process, or share content through Lumen, including receipts, proof files, contact information, images, locations, personal data about others, and materials protected by intellectual property rights.

Content visibility, moderation, and enforcement limits

Lumen may remove, restrict, preserve, or disclose content where necessary to comply with law, enforce these Terms, protect users or the Service, investigate fraud or abuse, respond to support or privacy requests, or maintain product integrity.

Encryption and privacy design may limit what Lumen can review. We may rely on metadata, reports, structured workflow records, visible profile data, console logs, support records, or other available information to enforce these Terms.

6. Prohibited conduct

You may not misuse Lumen or help others misuse it. Prohibited conduct includes:

  • unlawful, fraudulent, deceptive, abusive, harassing, threatening, or exploitative conduct;
  • impersonation, misrepresentation, or unauthorized use of another person's account, identity, image, contact information, or data;
  • sharing content that infringes intellectual property, privacy, publicity, confidentiality, or other rights;
  • uploading malware, harmful code, spam, phishing content, scams, or manipulative automation;
  • attempting to access accounts, systems, data, keys, APIs, console tools, or infrastructure without authorization;
  • interfering with, scraping, reverse engineering, bypassing, overloading, or disrupting the Service except where law expressly permits;
  • weakening, bypassing, or misrepresenting Lumen security, encryption, device-trust, recovery, or privacy boundaries;
  • using Split Bill, Ask Help, or messaging to conduct regulated financial, lending, remittance, investment, gambling, medical, legal, or tax services without authorization;
  • submitting false receipts, false proofs, false payment status, or deceptive requests;
  • exploiting minors or violating child-safety laws;
  • using Lumen to violate sanctions, export controls, or applicable law; or
  • instructing others to do any of the above.

7. Split Bill, Ask Help, and money-related workflows

Split Bill and Ask Help are recordkeeping and workflow features. They are not banking, payment, remittance, lending, credit, insurance, crowdfunding, debt-collection, tax, accounting, investment, legal, or financial-advice services.

Lumen cannot decrypt client-encrypted Ask Help request details, amounts, comments, proof descriptions, or proof files. Support can act on available identifiers and lifecycle metadata, delete encrypted records where the product permits, or review copies that you separately choose to provide through a support channel. Lumen cannot evaluate encrypted proof or resolve a dispute from protected Ask Help content that participants do not separately provide.

You understand and agree that:

  • Lumen does not hold, transfer, settle, escrow, or custody funds;
  • Lumen does not guarantee that any person will pay, repay, help, contribute, accept proof, or update status;
  • calculations, OCR, totals, participant shares, paid status, and proof states may be incomplete or inaccurate;
  • you must review all workflow data before relying on it;
  • disputes between users remain the users' responsibility unless Lumen is required by law to act; and
  • you must not use these features for unlawful, deceptive, regulated, or high-risk financial activity.

8. Calls, native sharing, files, and attachments

Calls and emergency services

Lumen calling features depend on your device, permissions, network, contacts, app state, and third-party infrastructure. Lumen does not guarantee call availability, quality, connection, or uninterrupted service.

Lumen is not an emergency calling service. Do not rely on Lumen to contact police, ambulance, fire, rescue, medical, disaster-response, or other emergency services.

Native sharing, files, and attachments

When you use native sharing, file upload, image upload, attachment forwarding, or My Space save actions, you are responsible for the content and destination you choose.

Lumen may apply size limits, file-type limits, compression, encryption, upload retries, diagnostics, malware or abuse checks, and storage quotas. Files may fail to upload, download, preview, or open if they are unsupported, unavailable, corrupted, too large, deleted, blocked, or inaccessible.

9. Console, third-party services, and software license

Console and operator tools

Console tools are for authorized operational users only. Console users must use only their own credentials, follow role-based access rules, access user or operational data only for legitimate purposes, avoid exporting or disclosing data unless authorized, preserve confidentiality, comply with security and audit requirements, and immediately report suspected misuse or unauthorized access.

We may log, audit, restrict, suspend, or revoke console access at any time for security, compliance, operational, or legal reasons.

Third-party services

Lumen may depend on or link to third-party services, including app stores, operating systems, identity providers, push-notification providers, device manufacturers, map services, file viewers, network carriers, hosting providers, analytics providers, and other tools.

Third-party services are governed by their own terms and privacy notices. Lumen is not responsible for third-party services that we do not own or control. Some Lumen features may stop working if a third-party service changes, restricts, suspends, or ends its service.

Software license

Subject to your compliance with these Terms, Lumen grants you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use the Lumen app and software only for your lawful personal or authorized organizational use.

You may not copy, sell, sublicense, rent, lease, distribute, modify, create derivative works from, reverse engineer, or attempt to extract source code from Lumen, except where applicable law expressly permits.

10. Intellectual property, feedback, fees, and service changes

Intellectual property

Lumen software, service design, interfaces, logos, trademarks, trade names, documentation, workflows, and other materials are owned by Lumen or its licensors and are protected by intellectual property and other laws. These Terms do not grant you rights to Lumen intellectual property except for the limited license stated above.

Feedback

If you provide feedback, ideas, suggestions, bug reports, or implementation proposals, you grant Lumen permission to use them without restriction, payment, or obligation to you. Do not submit feedback you consider confidential unless we have agreed otherwise in writing.

Fees and paid features

Some features may be free, paid, quota-limited, usage-limited, or available only to certain users. If paid features are offered, the price, billing, renewal, cancellation, tax, and refund terms will be disclosed before purchase or in the applicable purchase flow. App stores or payment providers may apply their own billing and refund rules.

Availability, beta features, and changes

We may add, update, limit, suspend, disable, or discontinue features at any time for legal, security, safety, abuse-prevention, technical, product, or business reasons.

Lumen may offer beta, preview, experimental, or staged rollout features. These may be incomplete, unstable, region-limited, quota-limited, changed without notice, or removed. Where practical and required by law, we will provide reasonable notice of material changes.

11. Suspension, deletion, and data consequences

Suspension, restriction, and termination

You may stop using Lumen at any time. We may suspend, restrict, or terminate your access to Lumen or specific features if we reasonably believe that you violated these Terms or law, created security or operational risk, harmed users or Lumen, or if we are required to act by law, court order, regulator request, or valid legal process.

We may also suspend or revoke sessions, trusted-device state, console access, feature access, quotas, or integrations where needed for security, support, or compliance.

Account deletion and data consequences

You may request account deletion through available product controls or support channels. Account deletion may remove or disable access to your account, profile, sessions, and certain account-controlled data.

Deletion may not remove messages, files, or records already received by other users; client-encrypted Split Bill or Ask Help records and limited metadata still needed for another participant, integrity, legal, security, or dispute reasons; call, audit, security, deletion, or transaction-like records; backups and logs until they expire through normal retention cycles; or data we are required or permitted to retain by law. Deleting an Ask Help proof through the available product control removes its active object-storage reference and triggers deletion of the stored encrypted proof object, while applicable audit, deletion, backup, or security records may remain.

After deletion is completed, you cannot use the same linked Google, Apple, email, or phone sign-in identity to create or link another Lumen account. As explained in the Privacy Policy, Lumen retains keyed cryptographic identity tombstones to enforce this permanent restriction.

Deleting your account may permanently affect encrypted data, device trust, Recovery Key state, and access to My Space or chat history.

12. Disclaimers, liability, and responsibility for claims

Disclaimers

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Lumen is provided as is and as available. We do not guarantee that Lumen will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, available in all regions, compatible with all devices, or free from data loss.

We do not guarantee the accuracy of OCR, calculations, Split Bill amounts, participant assignments, paid or unpaid status, Ask Help proof, diagnostics, sync state, delivery state, read receipts, call quality, or third-party services.

Nothing in these Terms excludes warranties, guarantees, rights, or remedies that cannot be excluded under applicable law.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Lumen and its affiliates, directors, officers, employees, agents, licensors, and service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, punitive, or similar damages, including loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill, business opportunity, or business interruption.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Lumen's total aggregate liability for claims arising out of or relating to the Service or these Terms will not exceed the greater of:

  • the amount you paid to Lumen for the relevant Service in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim; or
  • IDR 1,500,000.

This limitation does not apply to liability that cannot be limited by law, including liability for fraud, intentional misconduct, gross negligence, or other liability that applicable law does not allow us to exclude or limit.

Responsibility for claims

You are responsible for losses, claims, disputes, penalties, and costs arising from your unlawful use of Lumen, your content, your breach of these Terms, your violation of another person's rights, or your misuse of Split Bill, Ask Help, console, or account recovery features.

If you use Lumen on behalf of an organization, that organization agrees, to the maximum extent permitted by law, to defend and indemnify Lumen against claims arising from the organization's use of Lumen, its users, its content, or its breach of these Terms.

13. Consumer rights, disputes, and general terms

Consumer rights

Nothing in these Terms limits mandatory consumer rights, privacy rights, data protection rights, or other rights that cannot be waived under applicable law. If a provision of these Terms is unenforceable against a consumer under applicable law, it will apply only to the maximum extent permitted.

Export controls and sanctions

You must not use, export, re-export, transfer, or access Lumen in violation of applicable export control, sanctions, embargo, or trade restriction laws. You must not use Lumen if you are prohibited from receiving the Service under applicable law.

Dispute handling

If you have a dispute with Lumen, contact support@hellolumen.org first so we can try to resolve it informally. Nothing prevents you from contacting a competent regulator, data protection authority, consumer authority, or court where applicable law gives you that right.

These Terms are interpreted and enforced subject to applicable law and mandatory consumer protections. Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally will be handled by a competent court, authority, or dispute forum as determined by applicable law.

General terms

If any part of these Terms is found invalid or unenforceable, the remaining parts remain in effect. We may assign or transfer these Terms in connection with a merger, acquisition, restructuring, financing, sale of assets, or by operation of law. You may not assign or transfer your rights or obligations under these Terms without our prior written consent, unless applicable law gives you that right.

Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. Headings are for convenience only. Sections that by their nature should survive termination will survive, including sections on content rights, privacy, disclaimers, liability, dispute handling, intellectual property, and general terms.

14. Language and contact

Language

These Terms may be available in English and Bahasa Indonesia. For users in Indonesia, the Bahasa Indonesia version will prevail to the extent required by Indonesian law. For other users, the English version will prevail unless applicable law requires otherwise.
